Rock Paper Scissors Roundup
Oct 8th, 2007 by Lewis 7 Comments
My company recently had a RPS competition - that’s rock, paper, scissors to the layman. There were 64 comptetiors - who I call ‘athleates’ - and it was a ton of fun. You’ll be happy to know that I ended up in the top 8 with some solid victories. Not only that, but the entire event was for charity and with a $5.00 entry fee, we were able to dontate $250 (after trophy and prize money.)
The best parts of the entire competition was 1) the trash talk between competitiors and 2) the fun that I had destroying my first three challengers.
After being in the competition, I found it very funny how serious people got when they were competiting. One girl was very mad that a vertical paper was not accepted (paper must always be thrown with a flat hand) and one guy swore when he was down by two (we played best-out-of-five.)
Here are some great RPS sites:
World RPS - the definitive organization dedicated to the advancement of Rock, Paper Scissors as a decision making tool as well as a competitive sport. This is the international organization for RPS enthusiasts.
USARPS League - the more home-grown version of the international sport (and sponsored by Bud Light). Main differences: in the US league scissors can be thrown both horizontal and vertical. Horizontal scissors is illegal in international play.
How To Win at Rock, Paper, Scissors (and also how to cheat) is a great read for a good laugh about RPS strategy.
Rock Paper Scissors Spock Lizard - a new take on the old game.
Try playing against a computer for Rock Paper Scissors supremacy!

Have fun!

Rock Paper Scissors

Haha, I’m a big fan of RPS…although, I enjoy playing The Pushing Game much, much more. It’s where you have 2 ppl stand about a foot apart from each other and with your hands (against your opponent’s hands only) you try to get the other person to leave his/her stance. If your hand slips and touches, say, the other person’s shoulder (basically anything other than the hand) you would automatically lose.
I think the MAIN reason I prefer the Pushing Game over RPS is because of all the many ways you trick the person into losing, lols…and it’s an arm game that I and my pathetic arm strength can actually win at. Oh, and smack talk is never beneath me. =D
Smack talk is what sports is all about!
Can you think of a way to play The Pushing Game online? Now that would be interesting to see. I’d probably break my monitor.
I keep thinking everyone is kidding when they talk about RPS as a serious game. But angry over a vertical paper? And… I mean there are really news? lol. Awesome.
I was amazed when I started looking for information online. I was creating some posters for the floor and found the site. What a great way to have fun with little or no cash!
We had a lot of fun with the tournament at the company because it let you get to know people from all different departments. Also, since RPS is a ‘non-skill’ event, anyone can play and there’s no embarrassment when you lose (of course there is some skill involved because I made it to the top 8.)
Pretty soon, someone will be telling me that Thumb War is coming back to haunt us all…..
Did the Thumb War fall out of the mainstream? Where was I?
Now, why didn’t I expect you’ll have a comeback comment like that
