  • Starting a New Journey in Piapot

Recently, a colleague of mine decided to close one part of his life and move on to another. He left the city and a number of different IT consulting jobs to open a hotel/bar in a small Saskatchewan, Canada town.

His mid-life career change made me think about my own situation. I have recently begun to expereince more success on my internet ’side-project’ and know that the future holds great things there. At the same time, I am also seeing a larger degree of success in my current career, so that direction also looks positive. That being said, I find myself living vicariously through this friend of mine. I’ve often wonder what I would do if I said goodbye to it all, picked up my family and moved on.

If you’re looking for answers here then you’ve read the wrong blog today! As you already know I have many different interests and look to continually improve myself. I suppose it really comes down to figuring out what you want to do with your life and then taking the risk when an opportunity presents itself.

For a final plug, if you’re ever in Canada, taking a trip down the Trans-Canada highway through Piapot, Saskatchewan, make sure to stop in and grab a drink at the Piapot Saloon and Guest House.

Have a look at my friend’s blog at blog.piapothotel.com.

    1. That’s very brave decision…I don’t think I have the courage to leave what I have now to start something new on new place. Is your friend married? If so, I must say that your friend has a great wife and family which always support his decision.

    2. He isn’t married but he does have a very supportive girlfriend who is also excited about a change in direction.

    3. So, they are a great couple. Both love challenges…

    4. Your friend is sooooooo cool…
It kind of reminds me of the old show Northern Exposure. With the Dr. that moves to Alaska or Canada or something to pay back the folks who paid for his education. That was a cool show- I think.

    5. I think your friend has decided with guts! And I guess at the end it makes him happier?

    6. Hey Ryan - Thanks for the write up about me. I appreciate your comments and although this was written a while ago, I thought I would follow up with how things have been after 7 months of a big change:

The benefits of living in a rural area are much harder to quantify but I can say with utmost certainty the my quality of life has gone up substantially from when I “fought the daily grind” in the city. People are trustworthy and want to help you in anyway they can. I am still getting used to that concept of actually pushing to assist people to make their lives better. My “salary” may have gone down probably because i don’t need much so i never pay myself out of the company but I am able more spending money than ever. Just imagine not spending money on work clothes, parking, lunches downtown and not wasting time commuting, sitting in traffic and waiting in lines. A 2 person deep line is long now. I used to only bank on the internet but now I phone or go into the branch where I am looked after promptly (quicker than I could use an ATM). In fact, i don’t even know my PIN number for the ATM card because banking is so simple here. There are hundreds of examples in how I enjoy life out here better. I am not missing anything (Medicine Hat is an hour away and Calgary only 4 hours) but have gained so much in quality of life and the ability to enjoy each day.

The bar itself is rocking and has turned out to be a little party oasis in the middle of the soft rolling hills. The hotel has a bed and breakfast feel to it and we have received an amazing response to the extent that we received Christmas greetings from many of the hotel’s guest from the past seven months from all over the country and I have been able to pursue a new avenue of photography with the beautiful landscapes around here. Having the bar (and opening soon a gift shop) has allowed me to display photos and open a new revenue stream selling my artwork. My photography can be viewed at http://www.penguinfoto.com

I do miss some of the great people I have met in the city but am hoping that they will pack up the family and come for a visit - nudge, nudge Mr. Lewis :)

      cheers,
      Glenn

(ps - i wrote this here first but i think i will add it to my blog)

    7. If this isn’t a reason to re-examine your life then I don’t know what is.
